Carsten Nicolai, known as Alva Noto, is a German artist and musician based in Berlin, born in Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1965. He operates at the intersection of music, visual arts, and science, exploring minimalist aesthetics and reductionism through digital sound manipulation. His extensive discography includes the ongoing Xerrox series, with "Xerrox Vol. 5" released in 2024, and the HYbr:ID series, with "HYbr:ID III" also released in 2024, both on his Noton label. Noto is widely recognized for his profound collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto, notably the V.I.R.U.S. series and their Golden Globe-nominated soundtrack for "The Revenant" (2015). He has performed globally at prestigious venues such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Tate Modern, consistently pushing the boundaries of experimental electronic music.
