About

Born in London and based in New York City, DB Burkeman is a foundational figure in the American electronic music underground, widely recognized for introducing jungle and drum and bass to the United States. During the early 1990s, he held influential residencies at venues like The Limelight, MARS, and Red Zone, while cofounding the legendary NASA parties that catalyzed the local rave movement. As the head of Breakbeat Science, the first American record store and label dedicated to drum and bass, he curated defining mix compilations such as The Secret Art of Science in 2001 and Breakbeat Science Exercise Four in 2004, both released on Breakbeat Science Recordings alongside frequent collaborators like Stakka and DJ Dara. His DJ sets and curatorial selections consistently balanced atmospheric jungle with heavy, technical breakbeats. Though largely retired from the decks, Burkeman now runs the independent publishing house Blurring Books, recently releasing the expansive 2026 archival project ILLEGAL: Rave Flyers of the 90s. His transition from a pioneering selector to a dedicated archivist preserves the raw visual and sonic history of rave culture for future generations.
