About

DJ Sprinkles is the deep house alias of American musician, producer, and cultural critic Terre Thaemlitz, who has been based in Kawasaki, Japan, for over two decades. Emerging from the New York City queer club scene of the early 1990s, the project is defined by a critical engagement with identity politics, class, and the socio-economics of commercial media. Signature releases include the 1998 debut 12-inch Sloppy 42nds and the critically acclaimed 2009 album Midtown 120 Blues, both issued on the artist's own Comatonse Recordings label. Thaemlitz is known for a conceptual approach to DJing, often prioritizing mood and social context over traditional dancefloor functionality. By rejecting the industry's push for mass appeal, the project remains a vital, uncompromising voice that challenges the commodification of dance music culture.
