Egyptian Lover is a Los Angeles electro and hip-hop pioneer whose Roland TR-808 productions helped define West Coast electro in the 1980s. His early singles Egypt, Egypt and Dial-A-Freak became foundational records for electro-funk and booming car culture. He built his own Egyptian Empire label and has kept an almost unbroken run of 808-driven releases, from the 1980s through recent albums like 1985, 1986, and 1987. On stage he remains a live 808 performer and turntablist, a fixture at clubs and festivals worldwide. Egyptian Lover is one of the last true originators of the sound still touring at full strength.
