Brooklyn house pioneer blending afro-latin rhythms and spiritual disco grooves into expansive DJ sets.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Joaquin "Joe" Claussell is a foundational figure in the global house music community. He emerged in the 1990s as a buyer and DJ at the influential Dance Tracks record store before co-founding the legendary Body & Soul party alongside François K and Danny Krivit. His production catalog is defined by a deep, percussive aesthetic that bridges soulful house with organic rhythms from the Latin and African diaspora, showcased on signature releases like "Awade" (1996) and his debut album "Language" (1999) via his own Spiritual Life Music imprint. Claussell also co-founded Ibadan Records with Jerome Sydenham, releasing seminal tracks such as "Je Ka Jo" (1999) that cemented his reputation for expansive, spiritual dance music. Recently, he has focused on his Cosmic Arts community center in Brooklyn and remains an active selector, slated to perform at the Pacha New York opening weekend in 2026. Through his labels and marathon DJ sets, Claussell continues to anchor the underground house scene with an uncompromising dedication to musical heritage and communal healing.
