Mathew Jonson is a Canadian electronic musician and producer based in Berlin, Germany, widely recognized for his mastery of analog synthesizers and real time performance. His sound fuses classical piano training and jazz drumming roots with the driving, hypnotic structures of house and techno. Signature releases include the influential tracks Marionette from 2004 on Itiswhatitis and Typerope from 2003 on Itiswhatitis, alongside his 2010 album Agents of Time on his own label, Wagon Repair. Jonson frequently collaborates within ensembles such as Cobblestone Jazz and Midnight Operator, and he operates the Freedom Engine Academy to mentor emerging producers. His work stands out for its refusal to rely on digital samples, favoring instead a tactile, improvisational approach that brings a rare, human intensity to the dance floor.
