About

Refuge hosts a night of deep and classic house at its East Williamsburg hi-fi club, led by a back-to-back set from house veterans Doc Martin and Mark Farina. The pairing brings decades of underground selection, threading deep house, acid, and jazzy Chicago grooves through Refuge's custom sound system. New York producer Pal Joey, a foundational figure in the city's house and garage lineage, and local selector Miss Gypsy round out the bill. Doors are at 10 PM for a late night built for dancers.

House

A foundational figure in the American house music landscape, Mark Farina emerged from the Chicago scene in the late 1980s before relocating to San Francisco. He gained early recognition for his work with Derrick Carter and Chris Nazuka on the seminal ambient house track Mood, released on KMS Records in 1989. Beyond his contributions to house, Farina pioneered the Mushroom Jazz sound, a signature fusion of acid jazz, downtempo, and urban hip hop beats that evolved into a long running compilation series on Om Records. He maintains a prolific touring schedule and operates his own label, Great Lakes Audio, while continuing to champion deep, groove led house music. His ability to bridge the gap between soulful underground house and organic downtempo textures remains a defining characteristic of his career. Farina stands out as a rare tastemaker whose decades of commitment to crate digging and extended set formats have preserved the integrity of the underground dance floor.
